Midjourney alternatives that work in Russia: 8 image models

Alen founder of KADR Updated 2026-10-14 5 min read

Midjourney remains one of the best models for artistic images, but its official site has two problems for Russia: payment is accepted only by a card issued abroad, and a subscription costs 10 to 120 dollars a month. Midjourney V8.2 itself is available on KADR without a subscription: 4 variants per request for about 14 rubles, paid in rubles. Strong alternatives in 2026: Nano Banana Pro (editing and Cyrillic text), Flux.2 (photorealism), GPT-5 Image (complex descriptions), Seedream 4.5 (detail in 4K), Recraft (design and vector). Free domestic options: Shedevrum and Kandinsky. On Russian aggregators one image costs 3 to 46 rubles with no subscription (KADR data, October 2026). Below we look at which alternative fits which task.

What is going on with Midjourney

In 2026 Midjourney runs on version V8.2, which became the default in July. Discord is no longer required: there is a full web interface. Plans: Basic 10 dollars a month, Standard 30, Pro 60, Mega 120.

For Russia there is one problem, but a serious one: payment. Midjourney takes payments through Stripe, and the card must be issued abroad, with an address in the same country. A Russian card will not go through, and a VPN will not help: it changes your IP, not the country of the card. Ways around this and what they cost are covered in the article on how to pay for AI services from Russia.

Hence the demand for alternatives, and for ways to use Midjourney itself without a foreign subscription.

Midjourney without a subscription on KADR

Since October 2026 Midjourney V8.2 is available on KADR. No subscription and no foreign card: you pay in rubles only for the requests you actually make. Each request returns 4 variants, as on the official site. At 1K all four cost 9 tokens (about 14 rubles), at 2K 14 tokens (about 22 rubles). This suits those who need the Midjourney style from time to time rather than every day. The official plans are still an option if you generate in Midjourney daily and can pay with a foreign card.

What Midjourney is good at and what to look for in a replacement

People love Midjourney for its artistic default style: even a simple prompt produces an aesthetic, «designer» picture. That is its main distinguishing feature, and there is no full replacement on that point.

But for almost every other task there are models that do as well or better: photorealism, editing existing photos, text in the image, complex descriptions, design.

8 alternatives by task

1. Nano Banana Pro (Google): editing and Cyrillic text

The best model for changing an existing photo with a text command: change the background, angle or clothing while keeping the face. And the first model that reliably writes readable Cyrillic. For infographics, banners and covers with Russian text it is the main choice. On KADR about 25 rubles at 2K. Nano Banana Pro review.

2. Flux.2 (Black Forest Labs): photorealism

Realistic photos from scratch: people, objects, interiors. Flux.2 Pro is one of the most affordable models: about 6 rubles per picture. Max is about 13 rubles. Flux.2 review.

3. GPT-5 Image (OpenAI): complex descriptions

Understands a long prompt with many objects and conditions better than others. There is GPT-5.4 Image 2 with pay-by-quality pricing, from 3 rubles. The flagship GPT-5 Image is about 46 rubles. GPT-5 Image review.

4. Seedream 4.5 (ByteDance): detail in 4K

Outputs 4K straight away and is strong on detail and artistic scenes. A good choice if what you wanted from Midjourney was exactly an aesthetic, detailed picture, at about 8 rubles. Seedream and Recraft review.

5. Recraft v4.1 Pro: design, vector, style

Icons, logos, illustrations in one style, vector graphics. For designers who used Midjourney for brand identity. About 38 rubles.

6. Grok Imagine (xAI): fast and inexpensive

Fast generation for social media and drafts, about 9 rubles. Grok Imagine review.

7. Shedevrum (Yandex): free

Yandex’s own model, free, in the app and on the web. Fine for greeting cards, avatars and experiments.

8. Kandinsky (Sber): free, understands the Russian context

Available in GigaChat and Telegram. The model was fine-tuned on Russian imagery, so it understands local realities better than Western models: Russian architecture, everyday life, holidays.

How to get the «Midjourney style» in other models

Midjourney invents the aesthetic itself; other models need it described:

  • Name the style in words: «editorial photography», «matte painting», «soft pastel illustration».
  • Describe the light and palette: «golden hour, muted earth tones».
  • Give a reference: a picture in the right style is more precise than any description.
  • Use a prompt generator: ask a text AI to spell out your idea in detail. There is a template in the article on an AI prompt generator.

In short

There is no full replacement for Midjourney’s artistic style, but for individual tasks the alternatives are stronger: Nano Banana Pro for editing and Cyrillic text, Flux.2 for photorealism, GPT-5 Image for complex descriptions, Seedream for detail, Recraft for design. From Russia they are available without a VPN through aggregators with pay-per-image pricing, and Shedevrum and Kandinsky are free. Midjourney V8.2 itself is on KADR too, without a subscription: about 14 rubles per request with 4 variants.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Midjourney from Russia?
Yes. The official site is accessible, but payment goes through Stripe and accepts only cards issued outside Russia with a matching address, and there is no free plan for generation. For the official subscription that leaves a foreign card or an intermediary with a commission. Without a subscription, Midjourney V8.2 works on KADR: 4 variants per request for 9 tokens (about 14 rubles) at 1K, paid with a Russian card.
Which Midjourney alternative is best?
It depends on the task. For photorealism Flux.2, for photo editing and Cyrillic text Nano Banana Pro, for complex descriptions GPT-5 Image, for 4K detail Seedream 4.5, for logos and vector Recraft. In artistic style Midjourney still stands out, and on KADR it is available next to them.
Is there a free Midjourney alternative?
Yes, the domestic Shedevrum from Yandex and Kandinsky from Sber are free and work without a VPN. In quality and flexibility they fall short of the top models, but they are fine for simple tasks.
How much does Midjourney cost in 2026?
Basic is 10 dollars a month, Standard 30, Pro 60, Mega 120, with annual billing 20% cheaper. From Russia you add the commission of an intermediary or a foreign card on top. On KADR there is no subscription: a request with 4 variants costs about 14 rubles at 1K and about 22 rubles at 2K.
Which Midjourney alternative writes Russian text in the image?
Nano Banana Pro: it is the first model that reliably writes readable Cyrillic in headlines and short captions. Other models handle Russian text worse.
Where can I use Midjourney alternatives without a VPN?
In Russian aggregators, where Nano Banana Pro, Flux.2, GPT-5 Image, Seedream and Recraft are available for rubles (on KADR also Midjourney V8.2 itself), and in the domestic services Shedevrum and GigaChat.
