Camera movements in an AI video prompt: a dictionary of 40 terms with meanings and ready phrases

Alen founder of KADR Updated 2026-10-26 4 min read

The camera movement in a prompt sets how the viewer looks at the scene: moving closer to the hero, circling around a product, following a running person. The video models Veo, Kling and Seedance understand standard cinematographers' terms: push in, pull back, pan, tilt, orbit, tracking shot, crane, handheld. The main rule: one camera movement per clip or per shot, otherwise the picture starts to «float». Below is a dictionary of 40 terms with their meaning, purpose and ready phrases for a prompt.

Main rules

  1. One movement per shot. Split several movements into separate shots.
  2. Speed: slow, smooth, fast. By default, slow is better.
  3. Movement at the start of the prompt: «Slow push in on a cup of coffee...».
  4. For faces and products use less movement: static camera or slow push in.

Which models understand what

Veo 3.1, Kling v3 and Seedance understand all the terms above. Long continuous passes (one continuous take) work best in Seedance 2.5 with its 30 seconds per generation. Kling holds camera movement around people best.

Ready prompts for the models: Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1, Seedance 2.0. A vocabulary of shots, light and styles: prompts without English.

In short

The camera movement is set by a term at the start of the prompt: push in, pull back, pan, tilt, orbit, tracking shot, crane, handheld. One movement per shot, slow by default. For faces and products use a static camera or a slow push in, for landscapes a drone flyover, for a hero in motion a tracking shot.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set a camera movement in a prompt?
Put the term at the start of the prompt: «Slow push in on...», «Tracking shot from behind...», «The camera orbits slowly around...». Add the speed: slow, smooth, fast.
Can I use several camera movements?
Better one per clip or per shot. If you mix a push in, a pan and a zoom, the model often produces a jerky or distorted picture. Split several movements into separate shots.
What is a dolly zoom?
It is the effect where the camera moves towards the hero while the zoom pulls out at the same time: the background «stretches» and the hero stays the same size. Models do not always reproduce it reliably.
Which camera movement is best for a product?
A slow push in or an orbit over a small angle (slow orbit 30 degrees). A full 360-degree orbit is not worth it: the model will invent the back side of the product.
Which camera movement is best for animating a photo?
A static camera or a very slow push in. The less movement, the less the model changes the face and the details.
